CLOSE SHAVE
Husband and wife
on the carpet last night
inextricably knit.

Tell me, darling, kiss,
have you ever done this
to anybody else, kiss
honestly I won’t mind.

And he, poor fool,
in those sweet contractions
gratefully caught
very nearly confessed.

What maggots, oh what snakes,
would have crawled out from
the underside of the stone
had he lifted it.
